2 minutesHELLENIC PETROLEUM is a proud sponsor of the "HUMAN RIGHTS for Beginners" programme, which is implemented by the New Wrinkle non-profit Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Research & Religious Affairs, and the Greek National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings.
"HUMAN RIGHTS for Beginners" is based on the Council of Europe’s "Free to Speak, Safe to Learn – Democratic Schools for All” educational project, which was launched in November 2018 by the Council of Europe. It reflects the great interest of the international organization in improving democratic institutions and promoting the consolidation of democratic culture by the members of the school communities.
The project is developed around the aforementioned six main thematic areas:
- Making children's and students' voice heard.
- Addressing controversial issues.
- Preventing violence and bullying.
- Dealing with propaganda, misinformation and fake news.
- Tracking discrimination.
- Improving well-being at school.
The "HUMAN RIGHTS for Beginners" is addressed to 130 educators working in both public and private secondary schools in Greece. and comprises two phases:
- As its inaugural event, the programme will be hosting a two-day educational workshop session taking place in Athens on 25th and 26th of January 2020. The workshops of the first day will be carried out at the University of Athens’ Marasleio Didaskaleio. The workshops on the second day will take place at the Moraitis School.
More specifically, the first day includes presentations held by experts of the Council of Europe and workshops led by experienced facilitators in the field of education. The participating educators will attend six thematic workshops aimed at introducing and training them on issues crucial for the school community, as identified by the Council of Europe.
On the second day, participants will form working groups, and each will formulate a proposal for integrating the workshop material into the context of formal or non-formal education. A "mentor" will be guiding each group to come up with their proposal. At the end of the two-day session, an event will take place where all proposals will be presented to a designated evaluation committee and to a specific audience, qualifying for the title of the best innovative idea.
- The second phase of the programme will take place in February-March 2020. It will include in-classroom educational workshops based on the six thematic areas of the first phase. The workshops will be held in different schools throughout the country by our civil society partners as well as the winning team of the first phase, giving educators the opportunity to put their idea into practice together with students within the school setting.
